Art Provenance ReviewAPR

On objects.
On evidence.
On what remains unknown.

Research note / 04

The avant-garde
and its paper trail.

Collections, exhibitions and archival records offer different routes into an international field of artistic experiment.

01

Keep the field plural

The label Russian avant-garde brings together artists, practices and places across the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. For research, a broad movement name should lead toward specific works and records rather than replace them.

02

A collection and an archive

MOMus presents works and archival material from the Costakis Collection. Drawings, editions and objects make it possible to study more than finished paintings. A collection’s documentary setting helps explain what it preserves and how it has been interpreted.

03

Networks across media

MoMA’s Inventing Abstraction, 1910–1925 treated abstraction through international artistic connections and across media. For a provenance researcher, that approach encourages attention to correspondence, publications and relationships as well as the object itself.

04

Reassembled collections

Fondation Louis Vuitton’s Morozov exhibition brought French and Russian modern art together through a historical collection. Such exhibitions can reveal relationships among objects, but participation in a show remains a different claim from authorship or a complete ownership history.

05

Return to the individual dossier

The Natanov case study in this review follows the same distinction. Its public collection account is a source to cite and examine. Where underlying reports are restricted, the review records that limit instead of supplying a missing conclusion.
